Most of us have a LinkedIn profile these days and this can be a great way to connect with others professionally. Of course, it’s also a really powerful recruiting tool with the vast majority of recruiters (in-house and agency) using it in some capacity in their search for talent.
Whilst most of us go to some effort to keep the headline details up to date, one of the commonly overlooked parts of a profile is the skills section.
The graphic on the right shows many of the key elements of a typical profile and one view on how Skills and Endorsements can fit in. Many of us are quick to update our Certifications when we pass a new exam (yay), but often forget to update our skills. Crucially this is not automated by LinkedIn so requires manual intervention by you.
The good news is that this is really easy and takes less than 60 seconds.
- Log into LinkedIn and view your profile (HERE)
- Scroll down to Skills & Endorsements
- Click “Add a new skill”
- Add your new skills and click save

Maintaining a relevant list of skills on your profile will help others understand your strengths and allows you to present the best version of yourself to your peer group and other professionals. It’s also not uncommon for prospective customers to do a little research before reaching out and this is a great way to give them extra confidence in your ability versus your competitors.
Driving an organisational culture where individuals are encouraged to regularly update their LinkedIn profiles and share/update skills and achievements is a great way to enhance your corporate profile / brand.
